Chapter Sixteen - Harlow

Harlow pulled on her favourite pyjamas—comfortable black ones with a cute white dog print—and settled onto the old, grey sofa. The pyjamas were the first thing she bought when she found freedom three years ago. They were the first item she owned that she did not have to ask for permission for. They were getting tatty, but the soft fabric was a reminder of how far she’d come. And tonight she needed to heed the lessons she learned from that struggle, because Jett would not get out of her thoughts.

Plus the pyjamas were super soft against her skin. She sipped on a hot cup of green tea and flicked the TV on to a program about an adorable family farm with a bunch of kids—perfect. It was something simple to watch and required little thought. It should take her mind off Jett easily.

Who did he think he was storming into her house like that and nearly giving her a damn heart attack?

Her cheeks flamed as she thought about him staring at her naked body. He’d looked at her as if he wanted to eat every inch of her, but then something must have put him off because he snarled and walked away. It was probably the stretch marks. Not that she cared. She was grateful he’d gone.

She pulled her attention back to the TV. Two young girls, who were no older than Lily, were showing the camera how to milk a cow. A man she assumed to be their father sat behind them with a proud grin on his face. Poor Lily would never have that from her poor excuse of a father.

Yet a man as vile as Jett had two daughters. He was probably over fifty, so his kids were likely to be adults now. Did he stick around to be there while they grew up? Did they get on with him well?

Argh. Why would he not leave her thoughts?

The vibe between them in the bathroom stayed with her. The fear had almost made her throw up, but she wasn’t about to break the promise she’d made to herself when leaving London. She had to be strong no matter how scared she felt.

She sighed. The cute television show proved useless as a distraction. Maybe a book would be better. Getting lost in a good story always did wonders for procrastination. She flicked off the telly and stepped over to the bookshelf in the corner to pull down a copy of The Shining by Stephen King. She stroked the well-thumbed pages and smiled. As amazing as her Kindle was, the comfort of touching a favourite book gave her a feeling of contentment technology couldn’t match.

She stretched out into the flattened cushions of the sofa and opened the book, its pages yellowing. A few pages into the story and her mind finally settled. All thoughts of Jett disappeared. Until a knock from the kitchen made her head snap up.

She strained her ears, but there was silence other than her heart.
